Stay informed about the Fuel Card industry and how you can continue to save money on petrol or diesel for your business.
One of the keys to being successful in running any business is to keep a close eye on costs. Given all of the areas you as a business owner or manager needs to keep abreast of, a simple tool like a fuel card can make all the difference both for your piece of mind, and your bottom line.
Without fuel cards, you’d be constantly giving employees cash to pay for fuel… or asking them to pay on their own card, keep the receipt, and you then reimburse them. Inefficient, paperwork-heavy (especially in tracking expenses for tax), and with the potential for fraud.
This is why fuel cards exist; allowing you to pay for fuel from one account, manage and reduce your vehicle costs, and track all expenses easily. You can also forecast your monthly fuel costs, helping you stay within budget and tracking your servicing schedules. You can be sure that your fuel card is being used by the right person and for the right reason. Paperwork is minimised, allowing you to focus your attention where it needs to be – on growing your business.
In short, you really should take the time to look into fuel cards for your business – it could save you more time and money than you think! Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or 0800 111 391 and we’d be happy to help.
NZ Fuel Cards offers both Off-Pump Price and Off-National Price options for BP, Mobil and Z fuel cards. When we set up your fuel card account, we will look at which pricing structure is best for you in your area, and choose the most appropriate structure to help you get the best discounts. The majority of the time, this is Off-Pump pricing. Sometimes Off-National Price can be better (eg. at BP Truck stops, some regional areas, Premium petrol grades). But, what is the difference between Off Pump and National Price?
Off Pump Price is exactly as it sounds; a fixed discount off the pump price for every litre of fuel purchased. Simple. For example, a discount of 8c off the pump price of $1.869 equates to $1.789 per litre purchase price.
National Pricing is where there is a single national price set for fuel across NZ by each of the fuel suppliers. This price, like pump pricing, fluctuates. NZ Fuel Cards then provides a discount off this set price.
In most instances we advise “off-pump” discounts, as the customer knows what they are getting every time. But there are circumstances where Off-National Price offers a better discount. For example, if you were purchasing 95 Unleaded Petrol at BP in Nelson at the beginning of October 2020, you would have saved 20c per litre with our Off-National Price discount, compared to 8c with Off-Pump discount. Similarly, with our National Price discount at most BP Truck Stops around NZ you will save 16c per litre, compared to 8c with our off pump offer.
At NZ Fuel Cards we supply fuel cards for Mobil, BP and Z. Z Cards can also be used at Caltex and Challenge stations, BP Cards can also be used at GAS stations, while Mobil cards can also be used at various Allied, NPD and Waitomo stations. Somewhere for everyone!
We have negotiated separately with each fuel supplier to provide the best discounts possible, which means there is one card type for each fuel supplier. You can choose one card or a combination of cards from these suppliers to suit your needs.
We generally suggest using 1 or 2 cards per person. For instance, you might use petrol and diesel for your business, and get a Mobilcard for your petrol discount, and BP card for your diesel discount. Or perhaps BP is closest to where you live, and Z closest to your work. You can choose whatever suits your circumstances, and all transactions will appear on one bill.
Our NZ Fuel Cards customers used their cards and activated their discounts at OVER 1000 LOCATIONS during the month of August giving our customers a massive choice of locations to purchase fuel!*
Check out the map of all the locations where you can use NZ Fuel Cards here. You can filter the map to show by fuel supplier and location type (Service Station and Truck Stop) – this is a very handy tool if you travel around the country for work, wanting to see where the nearest top up spot is from home, or if you are deciding on which fuel card (or cards) is best for you based on your team’s movements.
*BP Fuel Cards were used at 303 BP and GAS locations, Mobil Fuel Cards were used at 264 Mobil and Convenience Merchants i.e. various Allied, NPD and Waitomo locations, and Z Fuel Cards were used at 485 Z, Caltex and Challenge locations across NZ. This includes both Service Station and Truck Stop locations
Fuel is one of the largest expenses for transport operators. Improved fuel efficiency across your fleet accumulated over time will generate huge savings for your business. NZ Fuel Cards is an Integration Partner with EROAD, a business which provides fuel management solutions for vehicle fleets.
EROAD’s telematics solution has an intuitive and powerful fuel management module, that helps you manage your fuel use by combining fuel records with vehicle distance and location information generated by the EROAD vehicle hardware.
Fuel data generated from your NZ Fuel Cards’ BP, Mobil or Z Business card is automatically imported daily from NZ Fuel Cards and can be managed in EROAD’s Depot. The EROAD fuel reporting suite helps you understand fuel consumption across your fleet, and identify exceptions and underperforming vehicles or drivers.
Gaining better visibility over fuel consumption enables you to address specific issues and monitor progress over time. Learn more about EROAD’s Fuel Management module here:
If you sign up as an EROAD customer, and are also an NZ Fuel Cards customer, we will provide the fuel purchasing data EROAD requires to access their fuel management solution.
Benchmarks are a price comparison service we offer for businesses who wish to compare their current fuel card pricing against our fuel pricing. This is a free service for businesses who’s monthly fuel bill is $2,500 or more.
There is no obligation to sign up with NZ Fuel Cards when requesting a benchmark. Our expectation is that we can offer you a better price, and you then decide if you want to take up our offer or not. Worst case, you confirm you are getting a good price from your current provider, and it cost you nothing to find out.
To request a Benchmark comparison on your current fuel card account:
- Confirm your current monthly spend is $2,500 or more.
- Send through a copy of your most recent fuel invoice to [email protected].
- Ask for a “Benchmark Comparison” to be done.
- That’s it!
We will endeavour to get the results of the comparison back to you within 7-10 working days. We take time to check each transaction you’ve made and compare at the same service station or truck stop versus our prices at those same locations or nearby.
Requesting a Benchmark
Email [email protected] with a copy of your most recent fuel invoice and request a fuel Benchmark. It’s that easy!
eAlerts are an email reporting system built into NZ Fuel Cards’ billing system, which when activated on your account can help you keep track of how your fuel cards are being used.
You can receive automated eAlerts when:
- Your staff spend over 80% of their monthly card limit
- multiple transactions are made in one day
- transactions are made outside normal business hours (eg. 8pm to 5am)
- multiple fuel types are purchased
eAlerts can be particularly useful when managing a large fleet of vehicles.
A customer had a fleet of 15 vehicles. The vehicles were only used by staff during business hours. An employee had removed a fuel card from a vehicle and was filling up their personal vehicle at an unmanned fuel site late at night. The eAlert informed the customer that a fuel card was being used outside normal business hours. The client rang NZ Fuel Cards and had the card suspended and investigated the transaction.
