How Much Does a Fuel Card Save You on Diesel?
A fuel card takes a set amount off every litre of diesel you buy, and the biggest cut is at a truckstop. With an NZ Fuel Cards card you’ll usually save around 20c per litre off the truckstop pump price at Z and Caltex. What you won’t see is that saving on the pump screen, because it’s applied when we invoice you.
How much do you save on diesel at a truckstop?
At Z and Caltex truckstops the card usually saves around 20c per litre off the pump price. At Z, Caltex and Challenge service stations it’s 9c per litre off diesel, and the same 9c per litre at BP and Gasoline Alley Services. On the Z Business Fuel Card you’ll also earn 1 Airpoints dollar for every 100 litres at Z and Caltex, and that sits on top of the diesel saving. Can a van or a ute use a truckstop?
Yes. Truckstops aren’t only for trucks, and a van or a ute is fine. They’re in urban locations and rural locations, all over the country. If you’re already a customer, the NZ Fuel Cards app now has a map, so you can see which truckstops sit on the runs you already do. If you’re not, you can apply online.
What happens the first time you use a truckstop pump?
It’s the same card and the same PIN you use at a service station, and it’s completely self service.
Put your card in before you pick up the nozzle. The pump pre-authorises your card before it releases any fuel, which is why it asks whether you for a specified amount or a full tank. Once that’s gone through, you fill up.
If something goes wrong partway through, there may be a delay before the pump will pre-authorise your card again. It’s one of the more common calls we get, and there’s nothing we can do to speed it up. Truckstop pumps also run faster than the ones at a service station, so keep an eye on the nozzle if you’re filling a ute rather than a truck.

Why isn’t the saving on my receipt?
The pump screen and the receipt show the pump price, not your card price. Your saving is applied when we invoice you, so the invoice is where you’ll see what you actually paid.
